The quick answer to this is:

Why are you using an old version of IM? I would recommend that you upgrade to the latest version, which is now called "Windows LIVE Messenger". MS switched to that a few versions ago. The latest Version in 2008.

You can download it and install at: http://messenger.live.com

History is certainly kept in this version (and you can turn it off or on).
